What are the Risks?
There are many risks associated with having tattoos.
- Pigments are mainly industrial organic pigments with high microbiological and impurities load.
- Blue ink has cobalt chloride, believed to be responsible for contact urticaria.
- Black ink has India Ink in it.
- Red ink has aluminum, iron, calcium, titanium, silicon, mercury, cadmium.
- Yellow ink has cadmium sulfide, which results in a swelling reaction after sun exposure.
- Malignant lesions have occurred in tattoos. Mercury-cadmium used in tattooing has been suggested to give a photo-allergic reaction due to red pigment.
- Tattoo pigments migrate through lymphatic tissue blood vessels are damaged during the tattoo process. De-tattooing with natural products is safe.
- Lymph node dissection has revealed black pigment in the tissue without metastases.

Q-Switched Lasers
Absorbed energy converts to heat (photothermal effect) or breaks chemical bonds inside the pigment (photochemical effects).
Mechanical destruction of pigment breaks down the crystals. Particles break up and form a solution of pigment molecules, leading to decomposition, going through blood vessels, going to lymphatic systems.
Carcinogenic amines are generated by a laser-induced cleavage of azo dyes.
Q-switched Ruby and Neodymium-Yttrium-Aluminum-Garnet Lasers
Target intracellular tattoo pigment, causing rapid thermal expansion, fragmenting pigment cells and the pigment becomes extra-cellular. It is then recognized as foreign by the immune system.
